Here is a quick interview we had with Levalet before his show at Galerie Openspace in Paris.

Tell us a bit about the title of your latest solo exhibition, “Everyday life Circus”. What is it about?

C’est une exposition qui explore l’iconographie classique des arts du cirque pour la détourner et aborder des problématiques contemporaines. Les numéros se déclinent en plusieurs installations qui abordent chacune un thème différent, à travers les clowns, magiciens et autres acrobates, on peut lire en filigrane un propos sur les médias, la bourse ou sur notre rapport au temps.

(English: The exhibition is about exploring the classic iconography of circus arts in order to twist it and approach contemporary issues. The different acts offer a variety of installations, each of them tackling a different theme, through the clowns, magicians and other acrobats, you can read between the line statements on medias, stock markets or upon our relationship to time.)

What would you say is this show’s most significant difference from your last shows?

Tout d’abord la taille, c’est la première fois que j’exploite un espace de cette importance, j’ai pu grace à ça travailler sur de grandes installations qui tirent vraiment partie du lieu. Ensuite on peut souligner l’arrivée de la couler dans mes travaux, elle en était quasiment exclue mais j’ai choisi de l’employer pour cette exposition afin de mieux servir sa thématique.

(English: First of all, the size. I am exploiting such an important space for the first time. I have been able, thanks to the overall surface, to work on big installations which are taking a real advantage from the premises. Then we can highlight the emergence of the use of colour in my works. Until now colours were almost excluded of my work, though I choose to utilize them this time in order to benefit the exhibition’s thematic.)

Is there a piece you’re particularly excited about?

Il y a plusieurs pièces dont la réalisation m’a vraiment intéressé, “Gestation – Délivrance – Naissance”, “Le poids des maux” mais je peux également citer “crématistique”, ensemble de 10 sculptures qui forment une boucle filmique.

(English: The realisation of certain pieces in particular was really interesting to me, « Gestation – Délivrance – Naissance » (« Gestation – Release – Birth »), « Le poids des maux » («The Weight Of Wrongs »), I can also quote « Chrématistique » (« Chrematistic » ), a set of 10 sculptures that make up a cinematic loop.)

“Everyday Life Circus” will have an opening reception on Saturday, May 7, 2016 from 2-6pm. And the show will run from May 7 to June 4.
